Il Cristianesimo sostiene che, con Gesù, Dio stesso irruppe nella storia umana. Nel quadro culturale della sua epoca, sia la nascita da una madre vergine in seguito a una procreazione miracolosa sia la resurrezione il terzo giorno successivo alla sua morte sulla croce equivalevano ad attribuirgli i segni distintivi della divinità. Nelle civiltà del Mediterraneo orientale del I sec. d.C. questi prodigi supremi erano segni propri dei numi pagani agrari e solari. Il mito di base, che si esprime in forme diverse per ogni cultura, consiste nel dramma del giovane dio che muore nel pieno della sua vita per rigenerare la natura con il suo sangue, ma rinasce con il grano nuovo della primavera per trasformarsi nel "Signore dei vivi e dei morti" e nel "Salvatore dell'Umanità". In Egitto questo dio è Osiride, in Persia è Mitra, in Asia Minore è Attis, in Grecia è Dioniso. Non si tratta solamente di un mito fondamentale del Mediterraneo, ma riveste un carattere universale. Per questo stesso motivo non può essere spiegato in maniera semplicistica come il risultato delle successive rielaborazioni di un modello originale, visto che lo troviamo anche in culture molto lontane tra loro, che non ebbero alcun contatto e che lo reinventarono autonomamente. Tra i nativi prenobscott degli Stati Uniti, ad esempio, è la Dea Madre che, commossa dalla fame dei suoi figli, si autosacrifica seminando le sue membra nella terra per tornare col raccolto di mais e di tabacco. Tra i celti esistevano riti che prevedevano il trascinamento della donna per i campi come rappresentazione del sacrificio della dea del raccolto, simbolismo di per se stesso centrale nel mito di Ci-bele e in quello di Demetra e Persefone, ma che non manca neanche nella religiosità orientale, in cui, come osservò il grande mitologo Joseph Campbell, il mito della creazione ricorre all'autosmembramento del dio. Questo prestigioso specialista crede, inoltre, che in Occidente predomini il sacrificio, mentre in Oriente si preferisca l'autosacrificio. Tuttavia con Cristo siamo davanti a un modello che combina entrambe le varianti: Gesù non solo si assume volontariamente il supplizio della croce, ma, dato che lui è «l'agnello scannato sin dalla fondazione del mondo» secondo il Libro dell'Apocalisse di San Giovanni, la sua crocifissione è stata decisa da sempre ed equivale a un autosacrificio di Dio. La Chiesa greco-ortodossa accoglie questa idea nella dottrina della kenosis, che concepisce la Creazione come uno svuotamento o rinuncia di Dio a se stesso. Nel IV sec. d.C, quando si posero le basi del Cattolicesimo a Nicea, i primi cristiani di Roma avevano familiarità con tutti questi miti e convivevano mescolandosi con i seguaci dei vari culti solari analoghi al loro, come quello di Mitra, che similmente nacque da una vergine in una grotta, venne adorato dai pastori e fu assassinato dai suoi nemici che gli trapassarono il costato con una lancia, resuscitando al terzo giorno. Di fatto, il trasferimento della festa della Natività di Gesù al 25 dicembre fu operato per far coincidere in essa i tre grandi culti monoteisti stabilitisi a Roma e dedicati a Cristo, Mitra e al Sol Invictus. La mitologia comparata ha dimostrato sino a che punto vennero reinventati i dettagli del modello di base. La Maddalena, come la Iside egizia, vaga in cerca del dio morto finché non lo trova; Iside resuscita Osiride, e Cristo risorto appare alla Maddalena dandole la novella del miracolo supremo. Di fatto esiste una speculare simmetria, un incredibile parallelismo che riguarda persino i dettagli apparentemente più triviali dei differenti miti. La prima "Sacra Famiglia" fu egizia: Osiride, Iside e Horus. Lo furono anche la prima "Immacolata Concezione" (in una variante del mito di Osiride, Horus viene messo al mondo senza ricorrere alla sessualità, e in un'altra leggenda, raccolta da Plutarco, si autogenera a Edfu), la prima "Eucarestia" (la comunione osiridea con pane e vino), il primo "Dio Supremo Uno e Trino" e persino la prima "Comunione dei fedeli" nel corpo del dio, compreso il tema della "fusione mistica". Osiride fu il primo figlio a fondersi in un unico essere con il Dio Padre (Ra) e il primo Salvatore degli uomini. Ma la quantità di numi agrari e solari che seguono lo stesso modello è considerevole: Adone (Siria), Bacco (Italia), Prometeo (Grecia), Orfeo-Zagreo nei culti misterici e così via. Tutti i grandi padri della Chiesa primitiva, la cui opera è conosciuta come patristica, conoscevano questi miti. A tale proposito, nei primi secoli della nostra era, si formarono due correnti opposte. Una, che si rifaceva a una tradizione rappresentata da San Giustino martire, sosteneva che questi miti erano parodie diaboliche ordite per proiettare dubbi sul Cristo e burlarsi del suo sacrificio. L'altra, che può contare su rappresentanti prestigiosi come Sant'Agostino, credeva si trattasse di prefigurazioni profetiche ispirate da Dio per rivelare agli uomini il carattere universale e la legittimità divina della missione di Cristo. Visto che l'irruzione di Dio nella storia, assumendo un destino terreno, era il fulcro del piano del Creatore, non c'era niente di più logico e naturale che imprimere questa immagine nella profondità dello spirito umano, facendo in modo che si esprimesse diverse volte nei sogni, nei miti e nelle trance mistiche. Secondo Sant'Agostino la vera religione era sempre esistita «dall'inizio della razza umana, sino a che Cristo venne in un corpo, quando cominciò a chiamarsi cristiana, già esisteva». Da questa sua prospettiva, comune ad altri celebri pensatori della patristica, Osiride, come il Prometeo greco, era una profezia ispirata da Dio. E' curioso osservare come questa polemica continua a persistere ancora oggi in seno al Cattolicesimo. Recentemente la Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede, diretta dall’attuale Papa Ratzinger, quando era ancora cardinale, ha castigato con il regime del silenzio il sacerdote e teologo gesuita Jacques Dupuis per aver sostenuto idee in questa linea, nel suo libro Verso una teologia del pluralismo religioso, mentre il cardinale emerito di Vienna, Franz Kòning, e altri 75 teologi cattolici si affrettavano a firmare una lettera di appoggio a Dupuis. Il problema è vecchio e obbligò, a suo tempo, Sant'Agostino a ritrattare la dottrina del "Cristo eterno". La chiave per comprendere il motivo di questa resistenza della gerarchia cattolica ad accettare tale tesi è semplice: facendolo si rinuncia al concetto secondo il quale «non c'è salvezza al di fuori della Chiesa» e, allo stesso tempo, si riconosce che esistono altre vie, anch'esse legittimate dalla rivelazione, per accedere alla verità di Dio. Oltre a questa polemica interna, gli antecedenti mitici di Gesù provocano un altro dibattito, questa volta con il materialismo. Da una prospettiva profana e razionalista, gli antecedenti agrari e solari di Gesù vengono percepiti come prova del fatto che i Vangeli non narrano una storia reale, ma un mito che avrebbe usurpato l'esistenza storica di un maestro di saggezza: un profeta o un messia giudaico. Di questo essere storico casualmente si tramandò che venne condannato e giustiziato, a cui vennero in seguito aggiunti gli elementi leggendari adottati dalle divinità di altre culture. Il problema di questa teoria è che esistono prove documentali precise del fatto che le coincidenze tra il mito di base già menzionato e la vita di Gesù non vennero aggiunte all'interno di un processo storico che culminò nel IV sec. d.C. a Nicea - quando vennero selezionati i quattro Vangeli canonici scartando tutto il resto - dato che le stesse fonti giudaiche (Talmud) avallano l'ipotesi che già fossero presenti in ciò che predicavano i suoi seguaci iniziali dopo la sua morte, compresa la Resurrezione. Affinché l'argomento avesse realmente un peso, la credenza in essa o nel suo carattere di "Figlio di Dio" avrebbe dovuto essere posteriore, come risultato dell'evoluzione culturale e delle modificazioni indotte nella storia originale dalla crescente contaminazione di elementi mitologici estranei, adottati da altre culture. Ma è palese che i cristiani affermarono la vicenda della Resurrezione immediatamente a Gerusalemme e non quattro secoli dopo essersi mescolati a Roma con i fedeli di Mitra. Spiace molto che lo Stato della Chiesa ed il Cattolicesimo non conoscano il libero pensiero, che non sappiano la democrazia e che non riconoscano e di fatto abbiano rifiutato la fratellanza con le altre religioni e con tutti i popoli e quindi fra tutti gli Uomini.
